The announcement from ICTU while we were picketing during the national strike on the 24th
that a second strike had been set for December 3rd caught most strikers by surprise.
Initially workers, most of whom were on strike for the first time ever, were concerned
that we would be going out again so soon. But once the news sunk in the idea of having a
second strike before the budget cuts made sense, its much easier to stop cuts happening
then reversing them.All over the country union sections and branches began the work of
organising for a second day of striking and effective pickets.

As news leaked that Peter McLoone was offering the government 10 or more days unpaid leave
many of those union militants doing this organizing were perplexed and a certain level of
demoralization set in. This unpaid leave ‘compromise’ made little sense when the main
issue was our inability to take further pay cuts. We were already down in the region of
13% in comparison with what we should be taking home once you factor in not only the
‘pension levy’ pay cut but also the tax hikes and the failure to pay the partnership
increases. Another 5 to 7% pay cut is not an option, whether or not extra holidays are
added as a sweetener. 54% of public sector workers were earning less that 40,000 before
the cuts had taken place. In particular those with families are already seriously
struggling to make ends meet. For them unpaid leave is not much of a compromise as they
cannot afford the loss of earnings in the first place.

Divide and rule

This ICTU proposal also plays into the hands of the main strategy of the capitalist class
in attacking workers in Ireland. We are many and they are few (very few) so what they fear
more than anything else is all workers uniting against them. To prevent this they have
played a very successful media strategy of getting one group of workers to fight another.
So private sector workers target the public sector workers and public sector workers
target the unemployed etc. Anyone listening to talk radio cannot but be horrified by the
ease with which large numbers of workers have failed for such a simple trick. Sure these
shows are manipulated but they do highlight the glaring problem in the IC`~TU ’strategy’.

This ICTU negotiating strategy plays into the hands of those who want to build on this
division. Unpaid leave will not only mean a further serious reduction in pay for public
sector workers it will also mean a serious deteroriation in services for all workers. For
all the hot air about the ‘unsustainable’ public sector when it gets down to the services
provided the same workers who fall for this rhetoric quickly realize that they need the
medical, education and other services that public sector workers provide. Unpaid leave
will mean fewer workers providing these services on any given day, that has to have a
knock on in terms of services. Already too few workers are trying to cover for all those
public sector workers who have already lost their jobs because they were on temporary
contract or through other means. The unit this writer works in has about 25% fewer staff
then 18 months previously.

On the positive side the leaking of the ‘compromise’ meant that for the first time serious
discussions about the need for an all out indefinite strike started to take place. It was
becoming increasingly clear that nothing else would force the government to back down in
its offensive on pay and conditions and switch instead to targeting the super rich to pay
for the crisis. The discussions of whether or not to accept the ICTU ‘compromise’ was
simply one of whether workers thought we were organised enough for such a fight and for
each individual how long they thought they could afford to go without pay during such a
strike. Such a decision will not be taken easily but it it now on the agenda.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice ..

This is the context in which ICTU’s announcement that the December 3rd strike is off has
come in. Back in March they called off the strike on the 30th for no reason other than the
promise of talks which turned out to be meaningless. This had a massive demoralizing
effect on the membership and took all momentum out of the struggle against the cuts until
this Autumn. Now it appears they have made the same ‘mistake’ all over again, called off a
strike without anything having been agreed by the other side. And what is on offer is not
only crap it is counter productive in terms of uniting workers against the capitalist class.

The problem appears to be that the ICTU leadership have no concept of what to fight for or
how to fight for it. Twenty years of social partnership means they are used to accepting
the premise of neoliberal economics and restrict themselves to tweaking that logic into in
a gentler form. And in terms of tactics to ICTU its all about negotiation and more
negotiation with strikes being a very, very last resort to be used only to demonstrate
that the negotiators have some muscle behind them and should be treated seriously.

This approach could sort of work during an economic boom. The capitalist class was making
so much money that it could afford to throw workers in Ireland the odd bone in return for
industrial peace. But for every cent they gave us they took a euro and they were careful
to give the cent’s in a way that would be automatically undermined once a crisis hit.

In general wage rises under partnership were at or slightly above the inflation rate. But
workers saw significant increases in take home pay, a trick that was achieved by
repetitive reductions in the percentage of our wages that went on tax. That trick was only
made possible because the boom and in particular the housing bubble provided the vast sums
through stamp duty that were needed to keep public services going. But when the boom ended
this was no longer true and it meant the means to destroy the limited gains workers in
Ireland had made were built into the system.

Where should the money be found

ICTU have so bought into this logic that when the government demanded a further 7% cut in
public sector pay to save 1300 million ICTU immediately accepted the logic of the
governments position that the 1300 million had to come from the pockets of workers and not
from the rich. This is not even remotely the case, for instance a 1% wealth tax which
would hit the richest 1% the hardest would bring in around 1500 million. We should be
striking for this and more as an alternative to the pay cut, more because a 5% wealth tax
would provide the money to reverse the cuts and launch a job creation program though
expanding the provision of services. That demand is something all workers, public or
private could unite around.

Our unions should not be agreeing to cut our wages and arguing with the government about
how exactly to do so. Our unions should be refusing any such cut and insisting that the
needed finance be raised by going after the rich, whether through a wealth tax or some
other means. Our unions should be seeking out ways to unite all workers in a common
struggle and included in this the tens of thousands of private and public sector workers
who have already lost their jobs.

It’s a waste of time to look at the existing ICTU leadership to lead that sort of fight.
Nor is it the case that there is an alternative leadership in the wings or even that all
union members are already in the mood for such a fight. The truth is that although workers
are starting to get ahead of the ICTU leadership for the most part until recently most
workers also saw no alternative.

The question of leadership is not a question of who is at the top of the unions giving
directions but rather of what the base believes. The alternative leadership we need is not
to be found sipping tea in a back room of Liberty Hall but rather is a set of ideas and
methods that we need to collectively develop together. Chief amongst these is that we, and
by we I mean all workers, unite around a demand that it is the capitalist class and not
the working class that must pay for the crisis. Until that unity is achieved they will
continue to play the game of setting one set of workers against another.

We also need to develop the ideas that will enable the hundreds of thousands of unionized
workers to not only take control of our struggle against the cuts but to bring in the over
one million workers who are not currently organised and build solidarity with the further
half million thrown out of work. That is no small task but it is what we have to achieve
unless we want to continue to face further attacks on on pay and standards of living and
if we want to see jobs being created rather than destroyed.

One minor step in that direction is the creation of the Social Solidarity Network in
Dublin. “The Social Solidarity network is a grouping of people who have come together to
provide a forum for workers and communities to unite to resist the attacks and to build
links across the many struggles which will break out over the coming months.” This is the
sort of initiative that needs to be spread across the county. The SSN has called a protest

We also found Egyptian and Lebanese anarchist websites which were extremely helpful.

Until now we are about 20 comrades. I believe that there more anarchists in the country
but it is hard to find them!

Lately, we became part of a bigger movement called the social left, which consists of
Marxists, feminists and others. Despite the fact that the movement has more than 1,000
members, we anarchists have, relatively, a very strong influence and effect in/on the
group. We meet in an Anti-globalization office in Jordan.

When we started reading, we looked for any form of anarchy in our own history and local
culture. After reading a book called ?Sufi tropics? written by an Iraqi writer (Hadi al
Alawi), we found that Sufism is ALL ABOUT anarchism. Actually we found a website on the
internet that talks about Sufi-anarchism? now most of us label themselves as Sufi
anarchists. We even found Sufi anarchist movements and groups from the 8-16th centuries.
So, after reading what we were able to find from Bakunin?s, Proudhon?s and Kropotkin?s
books, and after studying the history of anarchy in Spain, Ukraine, Paris, Mexico? and
after studying Sufism, we started to have our own understanding of anarchism.

a way compatible with his own understanding of post-modernism and the fall of ideology or
what he called nihilist Sufi anarchism (plz don?t ask me to explain!!!)

We heard about other groups in Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon and Palestine, but never met any of
them.

Last week, a very important columnist wrote about us ? anarchists ? in the most popular
newspaper in the country, after he saw our flag for the first time in a protest.

All political movements and parties in Jordan have a problem with numbers. Recruiting more
people can be very difficult because most people are too afraid to participate.

In Jordan we still suffer expulsion from universities because of any political activities.
Laws that are extremely hard to understand and interpret and which are used against
political activists, like:

* disturbing civil harmony!
* bashing higher status!
* long tongue!!!
* copying without permission!
* Unauthorized gatherings!
* Human Rights Watch talks about torture, kidnappings?there is also 3 years in prison
because of founding unauthorized groups.

So, anarchism in Jordan still has a long way to go but it is expected to grow in the

MA’ASARA

Invitation to the demo: “there’s a car going to ma’asara demo and from there to seih jarah
demo tomorrow”

In Ma’asara some 50 Palestinian, Israeli and international demonstrators marched on Friday
in protest against the Apartheid Wall. Soldiers and Border Policemen waited for the march
just outside the village, laying razor wire on the road in a location closer to the
village that the usual. Demonstrators aliened themselves opposite the occupation forces,
and within three minutes police charged and grabbed one of the village youth, arresting
him with no reason at all.

The demonstration proceeded, and speeches were carried in Arabic, English and Hebrew. The
joint Palestinian-Israeli drumming band played to the rhythm of the slogans chanted, and
some of the village children challenged the soldiers by pulling at the razor wire.
Meanwhile, some of the Israeli activists presented the soldiers with a map of the West
Bank and the Wall and with a specially drawn map of the area of the demonstration so that
they know how far away they (and the fence) are from Israel’s border.

After half an hour a deal was struck with the police that the demonstration will retreat
ten meters, and the detainee be released. Surprisingly enough, the police did not keep
their end of the deal. The demonstration went on for another hour, with people drumming,
playing football and proceeding with geography lessons to the soldiers. Eventually the
detained youth was made to sign a promise not to return to the demonstrations for two
weeks and was then released. Back with the crowd, he told his friends how he had been
beaten inside the police car once out of sight.

NI’ILIN

Protester Shot With Live Bullet During Demonstration Against the Wall in Ni’ilin

This Friday in Ni’ilin, some 150 Palestinian, International, and Israeli protesters,
gathered in a demonstration against the annexation of the village’s land and the wall
surrounding it. The protesters marched toward the gate in the wall (through which soldiers
enter when raiding the village), and urged the soldiers on the other side to refuse to
serve, reminding them that they are standing on a stolen land. In response, the soldiers
shot tear gas at the protesters, as well as 0.22 live bullets (two-two), hitting one
protester in the hip. The protester required immediate medical attention and was later

Retreating from the scores of tear gas and live bullets shot at them, the protesters moved
towards an uncostructed area of the wall. A group of soldiers, escorted with three jeeps,
crossed the gate and started advancing in the fields while shooting tear gas. Two
soldiers, hiding in the many olive trees that surround Niilin, tried to hunt and aim at
the protesters. Once the soldiers retreated back behind the wall, a group of the village
youths followed them back and confronted them there.

SHEIKH JARRAH

In early November the Al-Kurd family was evicted from a section of their house. On Tuesday
1.12 the settlers moved into it. When settlers lived in the other Al-Kurd family house in
the neighborhood, they terrorized the family for months, until they obtained ownership
over the entire house. This led to the eviction of the family a year ago. This will be
the fifth house taken over by settlers in Karm Al Ja’ouni.

Weekly Protest March from the Mashbir plaza to Sheikh Jarrah

Join a march from West to East Jerusalem in protest of the injustice committed against the
Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem. The march will end in Sheikh Jarrah with a
protest against the settler enterprise in the neighborhood.

The situation in Sheikh Jarrah is very explosive right now. The last three days were
filled with violent outbreaks, confrontations with the settlers and the police, and the
tent of the Gawi family was demolished once more. Yesterday the Al-Kurd family lost the
appeal they submitted requesting the settlers to be removed from the new section of their
house. Earlier today (Thursday) morning, police and secret service forces entered the
neighborhood and arrested three Palestinians. Two of them were not found at home and were
summoned to the police. There are large police forces in the neighborhood at the moment.
International presence is insufficient, and there is a lack of cameras.
We need greater presence in the neighborhood in the next few days.

Such criminalization, encouraged by different branches of the government,
businessmen and landowners, is made in a context of rising demonstrations
for social rights so the government has been applying several regulations
to those who occupy lands to demand their right to land and housing, to
communities that close the streets to seek or improve public services, the
workers that pressure to defend their source of work, achieve better wages
and achieve collective hiring, to students demanding resources for their
schools, users of primary health services and several other sectors in
struggle for their social and political rights. Therefore, the above is an
evidence of the strategy applied by the state and some private sectors to
restrict legitimate protest and the enjoyment of human rights enshrined in
the Constitution.

As a counterpart we have the situation of impunity for crimes occurred
against social fighters, where the signs of participation of businessmen
and landowners in the assassinations of workers’ leaders and peasants have
not been investigated and punished at all, and neither the political
responsibility of regional leaders in some of the cases. This impunity has
encouraged the hired killers as a method to silence and intimidate the
sectors in struggle for their rights. While in this mode there is a high
percentage derived from the feuds between trade associations for the
control of jobs, as happens in the construction sector, there have been
several cases where the contract killing aims to fulminate and dissolve
unions who dare to move for their claims and the more radical workers’
struggles.

For this reason a group of social organizations and human rights, student
and academics groups as well as different individuals, promote a campaign
to defend the right to protest, as lies in the universal declaration of
human rights and the Constitution, and condemn the opening of trials, the
use of hired killers and other mechanisms against this right such as legal
measures that ban the execution of assemblies and strikes within SOEs. In
this regard, we want to make the present statement to raise public
awareness about this serious restriction of the rights, and urge all
unions, peasants, community and students organizations, as well as the
alternative media to join actively this national campaign to defend the
legitimate right to social protest.

We ask for:

1) The repeal of sections 284, 286, 297 and 358 of the Penal Code; 47, 48,
49, 50, 53 and 56 of the Organic Law of the Nation Security and Defense,
139 and 141 of the Law for the protection of individuals with access to
goods and services, as well as 20, 24 and 25 of the Special Law of popular
Defense against hoarding, the boycott and any other conduct that affects
the consumption of food or products subject to price controls; all of
which penalize the right to protest.

2) The unbiased and clear investigation of all crimes of hired killers and
other crimes against peasants, workers and other social actors as well as
the prosecution and punishment for the offenders.

3) The full and immediate freedom for all the social activists in
detention for protesting, the suspension of the scheme of regular
reporting to the courts and other measures prohibiting union work in the
working centres.

4) No use of the security forces against demonstrations for social and
political rights. Banning the use of firearms and tear gas by police and
military during protests, and when they execute eviction proceedings
against actions demanding the right to housing and public services.

There is a way out of this system which destroys our life, a system whose
only function is to reproduce and to manage the corruption that is
originally created by it. The way out can be found to each one separately
and to everyone together. As long as we can still listen to the message
coming out from the insurrection of December 2008.
Which message?

The only way that we can initiate the liberation from the dark reality is to
begin deciding by ourselves the matters that concern ourselves. We must
realise that the logic “vote every four years and I will do the best for
you”, is the logic which reproduces this rotten regime.
We all have a portion of responsibility for our lives and for the
societies we live in.

As long as we recognise these responsibilities and take the steps leading to
the final cut of the umbilical cord that ties us with the authority, we can
begin changing the scenery around us with steady moves… with our goal being,
at the right moment, to get rid of the destructive institutions like the
parliamentary-representative democracy and to create new ones which will be
based on the equal participation of everyone.

These paths were opened since the last December. And these are the paths
which we are obligated to continue walking on without fear. In each space,
in each neighbourhood, in the schools and in the universities, in the working
spaces, in our stance for the immigrants, in our view about environment… in
everything that concern our life.

We prefer to decide for our lives ourselves, even if we make mistakes.
Then these mistakes will be ours too. We will learn, we will move forward,
we will really stand on our feet as a society…

Victor had, om de tegenstrijdigheden binnen het zogenaamde ?Bolivariaanse
proces? aan te geven, recentelijk een serie officiële aanklachten ingediend
waarin hij een groot aantal belangrijke, hoge regeringsfiguren en
politiefiguren beschuldigde van corruptie en mensenrechten schendingen.
Victor vertelde de media dat hij gelooft dat er een politiek motief was voor
de moord, en dat het een poging is om hem tot zwijgen te brengen: ?Chavez,
ik hielp je toen je gevangen zat en in de steek werd gelaten en niemand je
een kans gaf?, zei hij, ?maar nu ben jij duidelijk verantwoordelijk voor de
dood van mijn zoon en veel andere misdaden, omdat je, in plaats van de meest
fervente verdediger van de grondwet te zijn, de grondwet schendt. Als gevolg
hiervan lijden alle Venezolanen onder de onzekerheid die in dit land
bestaat?.

Deze politieke aanval moet worden begrepen binnen een regionale context van
degradatie op ieder niveau van de regering. Zoals mensenrechten organisaties
zoals Provea (www.derechos.org.ve) in detail hebben aangegeven heeft de
statelijke politie in Lara het tweede ergste nationale record wegens
mensenrechten schendingen, met in totaal 19,4% van alle zaken in 2008, met
een totaal van 31 slachtoffers. De statelijke politie is ook beschuldigd van
deelname aan afpersing, bankovervallen, ontvoeringen en de productie en het
vervoer van drugs in Barquisimeto, activiteiten die vooral de armen treffen.
De chronische situatie in Lara heeft geleid tot de vorming van een aantal
volksorganisaties, waaronder de CVCI, die in 2004 werd gevormd. De CVCI
heeft zich gekeerd tegen de betrokkenheid van hoge regionale officials ?
zoals Rodriguez Figuera, de voormalige politie commandant ? bij de creatie
van politie maffia?s, naast Luis Reyes Reyes, de voormalige statelijke
gouverneur, die ook heeft meegedaan en toen zijn rol toedekte. In plaats van
de officiële aanklachten te onderzoeken heeft de centrale regering de
ex-gouverneur beloond, door hem de leiding te geven van het Ministerie van
Volksmacht voor het Presidentiele Secretariaat (dat de bevelschriften van
Chavez tegenover het nationale Congres afdwingt).

Vanwege hun rapporten en demonstraties hebben CVCI activisten een aantal
bedreigingen met de dood ontvangen en is een aantal pogingen gedaan om hun
werk te criminaliseren. Mijail Martinez heeft op video de openbare

De rol van anarcho-syndicalistische netwerken en vakbonden is niet te
proberen iedere arbeider te rekruteren, maar om massale bijeenkomsten van
alle arbeiders die betrokken zijn bij een vorm van strijd te bevorderen en
te organiseren, zodat de betrokken arbeiders de controle krijgen. Binnen
deze massale bijeenkomsten pleiten anarcho-syndicalisten voor de principes
van solidariteit, directe actie en zelf-organisatie.

Op deze wijze is het anarcho-syndicalisme helemaal anders dan traditionele
vakbonden, die er naar streven arbeiders op een economische basis te
vertegenwoordigen, en de zogenaamde ?Arbeiders Partijen?, die er naar
streven arbeiders op een politieke basis te vertegenwoordigen. In plaats
daarvan verenigt het anarcho-syndicalisme het politieke en het economische
en keert het zich tegen vertegenwoordiging, ten gunste van zelf-organisatie.

Door op deze wijze te organiseren leren arbeiders voor zichzelf te handelen,
hun macht uit te oefenen zonder te worden geleid door vakbondsofficials of
politieke voorhoedes, waarbij de wijze waarop de maatschappij wordt
georganiseerd ter discussie wordt gesteld en vooruit wordt gelopen op de
wereld die we willen scheppen, zonder bazen of heersers: libertair
communisme.

?De geschiedenis van politieke partijen en vakbondsbureaucratie is een
geschiedenis van uitverkoop en bedrog?

Anarcho-syndicalistische doelen en principes

Anarcho-syndicalisten proberen solidariteit op onze werkplekken en daar
buiten te bevorderen, waarbij arbeiders worden aangemoedigd zich
onafhankelijk van de regering, bazen en bureaucraten te organiseren om te
strijden voor onze eigen belangen als een klasse. Ons uiteindelijke doel is
een staatloze, klassenloze maatschappij gebaseerd op het principe van ?van
ieder naar vermogen, voor ieder naar behoefte? ? een systeem van vrije raden
die bestaan uit herroepbare afgevaardigden van werkplekken en
gemeenschappen. Dit is libertair communisme.

We zien zo?n maatschappij als zijnde gebaseerd op onze behoeften die worden
geschapen vanuit arbeidersklasse strijd om onze behoeften in het hier en nu
na te streven. Onze activiteit is daarom gericht op het bevorderen,
assisteren en ontwikkelen van zulke vormen van klassenstrijd, locaal en
internationaal, waar we voordeel van hebben en ons dichter brengt bij de
maatschappij die we willen scheppen. We doen dit volgens de volgende drie
principes:

*Solidariteit. Als individuen zijn we naar verhouding machteloos tegenover
bazen, bureaucraten en de staat, maar als we collectief optreden keren de
kansen.
*Directe actie. We doen geen beroep op politieke of economische
vertegenwoordigers om namens ons op te treden, maar organiseren om de dingen
te krijgen die we zelf willen.
*Zelf-organisatie. Arbeiders zouden hun eigen vormen van strijd moeten
controleren door massale bijeenkomsten, waarbij zowel wordt geleerd te
handelen zonder bazen of leiders als zeker wordt gesteld dat ze niet van
bovenaf kunnen worden uitverkocht of gedemobiliseerd.

Wat doen anarcho-syndicalisten?

Anarcho-syndicalisten zijn betrokken bij een groot aantal vormen van strijd
op de werkplek en in de gemeenschap, sommige heel onmiddellijk en andere
meer lange termijn. Deze omvatten:

*Organiseren op de werkplek ? over kwesties van loon tot werkuren tot
werkpraktijken en voorwaarden.
*Organiseren van de gemeenschap ? van openbare dienstverlening tot
huisvesting tot het milieu.
*Staking en bezetting solidariteit ? het bemensen van piket lijnen, het
inzamelen van fondsen en het bevoorraden.
*Arbeiderssteun ? het organiseren van demonstraties, pikets en directe actie

heeft.
*Het produceren en distribueren van propaganda ? van reguliere gratis
pamfletten tot bladen, waarbij de ideeën van solidariteit, directe actie en
zelf-organisatie worden verspreid.

Active solidarity and proletarian leadership for the people’s struggles

transnational complicity with the Peruvian government.

Call the preparation of a robust response from the Andean and Amazonian communities before
the latest onslaught of state and big capital who seek to strip them of lands and
resources that are their livelihood. Likewise, we applaud the consistent struggle of the
guilds and unions that go beyond threats of repression and class addresses that are
